Dr. John F. Mahoney
Born 1 Aug 1889; died
American doctor developing penicillin therapy for syphilis. Public Health Service for laboratory and clinical studies of venereal diseases. Studies with colleagues have clarified the mechanism and rate of penetration into tissues by the microorganism spirochetes that cause syphilis, and also improved diagnostic serological tests. With the first penicillin supply, they confirmed other researchers’ work on the effectiveness of penicillin in the treatment of sulfonamide-resistant gonorrhea. Mahoney went further in 1943 to prove that penicillin was highly effective against primary syphilis.
