Born on August 26, 1906; died March 3, 1993 at the age of 86.

Polish-American physician and microbiologist best known for developing the first oral polio vaccine, which was administered to millions of children in Europe, Africa and the Americas starting in the late 1950s. He is also known for his work on human viral diseases, toxoplasmosis and cancer.
