Sir Thomas Clifford Allbutt

Born July 20, 1836; died February 22, 1925 at the age of 88.

English physician who invented the short clinical thermometer to meet the need for a convenient method of monitoring the course of a fever by taking temperature measurements at the bedside. Allbutt invented the six-inch pocket clinical thermometer, which could take a temperature in five minutes. Before his improvement, the instruments used were one foot long and required 20 minutes to measure a patient’s temperature. Allbutt has also shown that angina is caused by a narrowing of the coronary artery.
