Giant cell arteritis (GCA)

  • An autoimmune disease of unknown cause associated with a mostly granulomatous, necrotizing vasculitis of the large and medium-sized arteries.
  • Branches of the external carotid artery and the ophthalmic artery are particularly affected.
  • On clinical examination of the head, the temporal artery may be tender, hard, or pulseless.
