• An American physiologist who invented the microelectrode in the 1930s.
• She was the first woman to graduate from the University of Heidelberg, began research at Harvard
Medical School, and was elected to the American Society of Physiology.
• Examined the respiratory mechanism of a horseshoe crab and grasshopper and the respiratory center of skates, amphibians and mammals.
