  • He was a Swiss immunologist and pathologist who received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1996.
  • His relatively early work with colleague Peter Doherty defining the system by which the immune system identifies friend and foe.
  • His work since then has built upon this discovery, revealing how the thymus gland selects only white blood cells that react properly to virus-infected cells and investigating the complex interplay by which viruses and their hosts co-evolve.
