German-British biochemist who shared the 1953 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering a series of chemical reactions in living organisms known as the tricarboxylic acid cycle – the fundamental system for the fundamental pathway of oxidation process within the cell. These reactions involve the conversion of substances formed by the breakdown of sugars, fats, and protein components into carbon dioxide, water, and energy-rich compounds in the presence of oxygen.
