• American geneticist and zoologist known for his experimental work with fruit flies, by which he established the theory of chromosomal inheritance.
• At Columbia University, he began a revolutionary genetic investigation of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster.
• In 1910, he discovered a sex link in Drosophila, and recognized a link between eye color in fruit flies and color blindness in humans.
